Getting Started On Dressmaking

If want to release your creativity by producing wonderful pieces of clothing as well as other things such as decorations and personal items, you don’t have to spend too much time and money just to learn the craft.

Here are some steps that can help you get started with dressmaking:

1. Choose the type of sewing suitable for dressmaking. For beginners, one of the most important things to consider is the type of sewing that he or she wishes to do. Usually, sewing is done using the hand alone because this gives personal touch and displays the sewer’s talent in sewing. But, since the sewing machine is now available to make the work easier, faster, accurate, and convenient, more and more people prefer using it. For hand or machine sewing, you need tools such as different types of needles and threads.

2. Decide which area would you really want to pursue. Once you have decided whether you will be sewing by hand or by machine, the next step is to determine what will you be sewing. The most common thing that needs sewing is for making clothes. But, it can also be used in creating other items such as shoes, stuffed toys, curtains, floor mats, tablemats, and others.

3. Consider the fabric to be used for dressmaking. After deciding what will you be sewing, you can now proceed to looking for fabrics that will fit it. For clothing and other personal items, the most common fabrics used are made of cotton because this is hypoallergenic, strong, and easy to work on compared to other types of fabrics. But, you may also opt for other synthetic fabric types for curtains and mates such as wool, silk, satin, and others depending on the type of clothes or items you will be sewing.

4. Collate the patterns to be used for dressmaking. The next step is to choose patterns for your dressmaking project. Dressmaking patterns usually are composed of simple sheets papers that are marked with specific measurements to achieve the proper size and fit for the one who will be using it.

Sewing Is a Valuable Skill, Craft or Hobby

Home economics courses teach sewing, and sometimes students at the time think this will be a waste of their time. The male students especially think that they will never use the skills that they learn in sewing class because their mother or their sister always sewed their buttons back on their shirts and patched up the elbows on their jackets. Later, the male student goes off to college or leaves the nest for some other reasons and finds out that they need those sewing skills because their mother isn’t around. They have to get out a needle and thread and do their own sewing.

Sewing skills can be very valuable for other jobs other than sewing buttons on a shirt. There are many times when a small tear can ruin a beautiful garment unless a repair is made quickly and carefully. Sewing also comes in handy if a ‘patch’ needs to be put onto a uniform or a trim needs to be put on a school costume. There are tailors at most dry cleaning establishments that can do sewing tasks, but if the hem on a prom dress comes down at the last minute, there is no time to get to the dry cleaners.

Sewing Can Be a Financial Windfall

Sewing can save the budget if it is used to produce some of the garments that are often bought in stores. There are some great shops with lots of fabrics at reasonable prices that can be made into dresses, shorts and prom gowns. The garments that are sewn at home will be very distinctive from those that are in the shops. A large department store will have racks and racks of garments that are very similar. A person with sewing skills can make their own clothes that are unique.

The fabric shops have great patterns with clear directions for making the latest styles. Even a novice seamstress can follow these directions to produce a beautiful garment. This same seamstress can also make curtains and draperies to redecorate the house. The same shops have great books with directions for making valances and draperies in many different styles. The fabric shops also have great patterns and ideas for making Halloween costumes or special clothes for school events. There are also directions and patterns for novelty items such as decorator pillows. A seamstress can get a great sense of accomplishment after completing a special project.
